Today i want to introduce you to my fictional client, Stella.
Stella is an online coach in her early 30s who teaches women how to better their health with the help of green smoothies. Her group coaching business has not taken off enough to be her sole income, so she has 3 individual clients while also working at a day spa. Stella is single with a dog named Polly and in her spare time she like to have brunch with her girlfriends, go on the occasional online date, and make progress on the fiction book she’s attempting to write.
Like most entrepreneurs, Stella is constantly spinning a bunch of plates in the air, and although from the outside, she seems to have her shit generally together, she can’t quite understand why she never feels productive. So I’m going to use Stella as my client and we’re going to change her life together.
As I mentioned, Stella is of course fictional and not based on anyone I know. Throughout my writing and podcasts, we’ll use Stella’s life and circumstances to help make her more productive and efficient.
I’m hoping that you will find some similarities with your situation and Stella’s and you can take some of the things I do with her and apply them to your own life.
When Stella comes to me for help, first I want to determine her ONE thing in this season of her life.
Basically, if you think about it, there is always one thing you are looking to accomplish or get better at. It could be in any part of your life: romantic relationships, business, family, personal growth. And the length of each season of life is really up to you.
Some people will have you drill this down to your ultimate one thing but I think that’s a lot of pressure. Because what’s going to happen is you end up not doing anything at all if you don’t feel like you’ve mastered the idea of what you’re here on this earth to do.
You want to get started, so think about this current season and what that means for you.
It could be the next month, quarter, year, 5 years, whatever!
For Stella, her one thing is the group coaching portion of her health business. She’s decided that the season she is focusing on is the next 6 months. Because if she can’t create meaning in that period of time while going all in, she will reevaluate.
Now that she has her one thing - she knows what she should be focusing every day. This gives her a North star- she’ll still have to go into deep planning to know the exact steps she’ll need to take along the way, but at least now she knows what she’s working toward.
Once you’ve determined your one thing - you’ll know what you should be focusing every day.
Next we define the masterpiece day.
The idea is if you can have as many masterpiece days as possible, they build on each other, and multiple great days build your great life.
If you could have an ideal day, what would that look like?
At a simple top level, I want you to think about what would make you feel satisfied at the end of the day?
If 9pm came and you looked back at what you accomplished for the day, what would make you feel great? Here are some examples:
Make sure you have 30 minutes of movement
Make progress on writing your book - 500 words
Waking up early enough to watch the sunrise
Family time
Work on a specific part of your business - e.g. DM’d 15 people (because you know your numbers and you know how many people you need to dm to bring in the sales)
For Stella, if she were to look back on her perfect day, she would:
Make at least 1 connection with a friend or immediate family member - phone, text - that’s important to her so she wants to have that daily touchpoint
Put effort into creating new green smoothie recipes - whether that is actually creating, or doing research at the farmer’s market, or whatever that looks like for her
She tends to get anxious when she gets overwhelmed so she wants to do at least 10 minutes of a mindfulness practice, like meditation
She’s writing a book so she wants to write at least 500 words per day - that’s not a lot, so it gives her flexibility on days when she can’t get in flow and allows her not to be tough on herself
Lastly, she wants to spend quality time with her dog, like getting her some movement, or cuddling while she watches her favorite show
These can be anything you want - hopefully they make you happy, motivated, or fulfilled. Theres no right or wrong - don’t let any guru tell you you have to wake up at 5am and do a 2 hour morning ritual. If that’s your jam then it goes on your list, if you’d rather poke sticks in your eyes than wake up at 5am, then obviously that’s not going on your list.
Next, map out your daily planning — let’s walk through it with Stella
