The $0.99 item that will change how you work
Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them.
📓 The $0.99 item that will change how you work
Did you know your brain has a rehearsal loop? It continuously cycles your ideas over and over again making sure you don’t forget — until you get those thoughts out and written down somewhere. That means your immediate thoughts are continuously trying to keep your attention, and you need to dump them so you can focus on other things.
Enter, the little pocket notebook.
Carrying a tiny notebook around serves a few purposes. First of all, it gives you a place to jot down all those quick thoughts.
“That’s what my phone is for, Miranda!”
Have you ever reached for the Notes app on your phone only to be distracted by something else and then forget what the note was you were going to jot down?
Yeah, a notebook also keeps you less distracted when those thoughts pop up.
Lastly, it gives you a place to write down your most important tasks you want to get done. Take it with you wherever you go and cross those tasks off that list.
There’s something different that happens when you write with pen and paper versus when you type on your computer or in your phone. And when you actually cross that item off your list, you’ll get a crazy sense of satisfaction. Also, have you ever looked back through a notebook that you’ve kept tons of ideas and scratched off to-do items?
It’s oddly satisfying.

What happens to the items in your digital to-do list? They’re gone — or hidden somewhere — and you don’t feel the same sense of accomplishment.
Give it a try for a few weeks and see how you feel. If you don’t feel any different, go back to whatever you’re doing now.
But something tells me that you’ll find yourself getting a few more things done throughout the day.
📝 This week I … and here’s how it went
I’m gonna try something new with you guys—I’ll be trying new things and will share them with you here. Life experiments, if you will.
I’m always looking to start new habits or do things that are “good” for you. But at some point I eventually fall off the wagon (so to speak). So I thought, why not document whatever I’m working on and let you know how it went?
For example, waking up at 5am every day, tracking my steps to hit a consistent step count daily, writing a certain number of words to hit a writing goal, etc.
Do you have something that you do consistently that has changed your life? I’m still thinking about what my first task will be so if you have any ideas, send them my way!
