What being a Swiftie taught me about business

Taylor Swift’s business roadmap

Is vegan turkey even a thing?

For Christmas this year it looks like I have been roped into spending the day at my sister-in-law’s—my 16 year old daughter is not thrilled about it, and they are serving a vegan turkey… hmmm…

OK, I’m not staying long enough to carve into that “turkey” (hey I used to be vegan and I’ve made the executive decision to not spend any more holidays that way), but nevertheless, I am sooo very excited that our 2-week break is finally upon us!

I might pop into your inbox before the new year - although I can’t guarantee it - and I’m sure you’ll be busy too, but love, I am wishing you the merriest Christmas and the happiest of holidays! 🥂

Let's get into it...

🖥️ How Taylor Swift has inspired me for 2024

Taylor Swift is in her Icon Era.

2023 has been her year.

One of the most successful world tours in history.

She hit billionaire status.

(and let’s not mention her new NFL arm candy).

Like her or not… She. Is. A. Legend.

I’ve been following her success and it’s inspired me to channel my inner icon for 2024.

Could 2024 be my icon era?

You might be wondering, “what does music have to do with business productivity?”

Well, here are some things she’s doing right and how you can work it into your productivity game.

Consistent Work Ethic

Taylor is 34 years old and has been singing and performing since she was 10. Talk about work ethic! Many of us are out here complaining about sending out newsletters or posting content consistently, but when you put it in perspective of really grinding and working, Taylor is the lesson. She has a hand in every piece of her business and is constantly working. Creating a strong work ethic and showing up when you say you will is the backbone of creating a successful business.

Adaptability in Work

We all know that she started out in country music. But when her brand needed to change and evolve, she adapted. She saw a lane and jumped in it, and now she’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world (who can fall back into the country lane when needed). Just as she effortlessly shifts from country to pop, being open to change and embracing diverse challenges in the professional journey allows for a more versatile and fulfilling career. Don’t be afraid to stay flexible when it comes to new opportunities or unexpected shifts in your work.

Effective Task Management

Taylor's songwriting process is like crafting a well-organized to-do list. She starts with an idea, builds on it, and transforms it into a masterpiece. Similarly, breaking down your work tasks into smaller, manageable components and then systematically addressing each one ensures a smoother workflow. Create your own professional masterpiece (and masterpiece day), where each completed task contributes to the overall success of your plan.

Career Trajectory and Project Planning

I don’t think Taylor does anything without planning ahead—she’s famous for dropping tons of Easter eggs in her music—her music is like one big project and each phase represents a well-executed project milestone. Don’t just throw caution to the wind or throw things at the wall just to see what sticks, map out where you are to where you want to go, with each milestone along the way.

Collaborations and Team Productivity

We can’t do business alone! As much as I would like to curl up in my house or retreat to a desert island somewhere with my laptop, business is collaborative. She’s a collaborative girlie and she’s used those stepping stones along the way. Think about the partnerships you can forge with like-minded individuals in your industry. What products are compatible? Reach out and get on podcasts or participate in product bundles. Decide on a specific number of collabs and try to reach that goal this year!

Album Releases and Product Launches

Product? Service? Album?

They all depend on product launches. Taylor’s ability to captivate audiences during album releases provides insights into creating impactful launches. Her marketing team is genius, they never cease to amaze me. Building anticipation through strategic marketing, creating a buzz, and delivering a quality product are essential elements to eyes on your business.

Don’t skip the launch buzz.

Social Media Engagement and Networking

Finally, it’s all about connection. Taylor has fans. Tons of them. And even though there are millions of Swifties around the world, they all feel like they’re a part of some inner circle. Think about ways you can connect with people in your community—whether it’s giving them a loving name, or just sending out little gifts to your subscribers. Or something I’ve seen done really well is inside terminology that only your subscribers know about. People will want to consume more from you just to figure out what the heck you mean when you mention ‘the lemon square incident’.

I think 2024 can be your year (and mine too) if you are ready for it. Attend one of the many—I’m sure you’ve come across at least one—planning parties to jumpstart your creative juices.

Here’s to the new year.

Here’s to YOUR icon era.

☕️ Simmer on this tip: Email deliverability is changing

I’ve been meaning to watch this and I don’t know how long the replay will be available, but now that there’s some down time, you definitely want to get in on the changes that Google and Yahoo are making to email. Deliverability expert, Cheryl Rerick, did a webinar last week on how they are changing deliverability and what it means for your email list in 2024. Check it out here to see how these changes might affect you.

🎨 Can you relate? Check out my art!

Ya’ll! I am an ar-teest! So each year I send out end-of-year client gifts, and a couple years ago, I sent everyone one of those paint by numbers kits (I got mine from Masterpiece by Numbers), then I picked put a couple for myself. My first painting took a few months to finish (don’t be fooled into thinking this is a girl’s night sip n’ paint), and I’m currently working on my second. Whew, these are not for the faint of heart, cause these things are detailed and some of these numbers are TINY. But— the end result is so great, and it gives me such satisfaction of finishing it.
